Budapest, located on either side of the Danube River, is the capital city of Hungary and home to one-fifth the country’s population. With roughly two million inhabitants, Budapest is the main source of commerce, culture, transportation and politics.
Co-existing as a city since 1873, Budapest has historically consisted of two major areas on opposing sides of the bank -- Buda on the west and Pest on the east -- as well as the smaller area of Obuda. Both sides host monumental buildings and lush parks comparable to many major attractions in more-famed European cities.
