Budapest - crime

Like many Eastern European countries, there is not a heavy presence of violent crime, but petty crime is abundant. Pickpocketing and theft are the biggest problems that tourists face during a stay in Budapest.

A good rule of thumb is if you are not conscious of where you valuables are, they are in danger. Cameras, wallets and purses should not be left unattended, but vigilance can eliminate most problems with theft.

Prostitution is accepted in “tolerated zones,“ most commonly in the brothels.

A common practice in the city as well, targets the younger male tourists. Girls on the street lure them into bars for a drinks, resulting in an outrageous tab that the men are then forced to pay as the bar owners are in on the scheme.
